Charles Watson, Alan Power

Charles Watson – half of indie duo Slow Club and member of garage pop supergroup The Surfing Magazines – presents material from his debut solo outing, Now That I’m A River.

Using some of his own fiction writing as a starting point for the lyrics, it’s a literary journey, taking inspiration from themes in JG Ballard’s Hello America. It’s in part an exploration of Watson’s enduring fascination with traditional harmony singing, as he layers samples of his own voice to create a woozily enthralling atmosphere. But his pop sensibilities remain throughout, as his tranquil lo-fi songwriting is filtered through amp fuzz.

As well as being his first solo album, Now That I’m A River also marks Watson’s debut as a producer. For the record, he assembled a band of friends – including Hot Club De Paris’ Paul Rafferty, Guillemots’ Fyfe Dangerfield, plus guest spots from Rozi Plain and members of The Deep Throat Choir – to take on his imagistic and beautiful songwriting.
